Something nasty is happening to the fairy settlement. For one thing, there's a sudden overabundance of rats and that's just the start of the weird occurrences. An epidemic of boils, water turning to blood and an inexplicable darkness follow, making Stephen imagine he's living in Biblical plague times in ancient Egypt. Someone with unimaginable power is causing the chaos, but how is it being done and why? Quina, unconventional healer and the latest member of the group, seeks spiritual help from her dead sister, and, along with help from the Chief Librarian, points everyone towards a possible answer, although it's a very dangerous path to find it. But the answer appears to defy imagination and, even if it is correct, how could ordinary mortals possibly hope to overcome the wielder of such god-like powers? To win through could mean the ultimate sacrifice, but will even that be enough?
