Travelling to London to invest family money in the new Bank of England, he stumbles across one. A chance meeting with a man on the way leads him to strike out on his own, away from the family company and into the world of navy gunsmithing with a new company.

This is the first step on a considerable journey that is destined to lead him to risk ruin, dishonor, and humiliation and both make and break new friendships and family ties. It also leads to unexpected love, fortune, and marriage. It takes him to exotic India and Europe, specifically Germanic Europe and two hitherto unregarded townsâ€"Oberglau and Blenheim.

But at least he wasn’t alone. He goes with some travelling companionsâ€"tens of thousands of men in red coats.
