then disappeared. He was a student activist in Mexico, she an American on vacation. Their meeting was improbable, and they separated when she returned to her comfortable home and he went on to be his country's conscience.

Seventeen years later he was rumored to be running for the Mexican presidency, and the State Department wanted her on hand to make sure his aims were friendly. She resisted at first--she had stopped trying to change the world years ago. Then she went, and she was glad.
