Ravenswyke

A colorful family saga set on the seacoast of North Yorkshire, England, in the village of Ravenswyke. It opens in 1916 as World War I is being waged on the continent and spans the years until World War II. At home, the influence and changes brought about by technology and changing economic and social conditions are making inroads on a traditional way of life in this British fishing village. With his father and older brothers away at war, Reuben Godson, the youngest, is charged with the responsibility of of maintaining his family's fortunes and his own reputation as the most successful fisherman in the village. His romance with a local girl, Emily Duckett, his emergence into manhood and his grasp of the conflict between interests of families make the focus of this novel of village life and the effects of progress.
