Newly married, Mary Lou and her husband, Tom, leave her frontier home in Kansas for Tom's ranch in Texas. The prospect of meeting new relatives and making a home so far from her own family and friends has Mary Lou nervous.

She soon discovers that, while her life is different in many ways, the needs of people don't change. How can she encourage her mother-in-law, grieved by a wayward son? And what of Darcy, her sister-in-law from Boston who sees her Texas home as desolate, uncivilaized outpost?
