When Jill's family moved into their new house in a small Kansas town on her father's retirement from the Air Force, she had no idea the impact that greeting the boy next door would ultimately have on her life. Robbie was shy, and the Robertson's often overhead loud tirades from the drunken Mitchell father next door, including much shouting and loud crying, sounds of leather meeting skin and breakables being smashed. Jill and Robbie were inseparable until, his father killed a family of three while driving drunk, and Robbie became a stranger to Jill. Meanwhile, Jill goes on with her life, brokenhearted at the loss of her best friend When Jill's father drops dead from a heart attack, she and Robbie are both devastated. He had been a proxy father to Robbie, and Jill adored the man. They seek out each other for comfort. Then years later, Robbie proves to be a guardian angel to Jill's mother when she suffers a stroke. Divorced, Jill decides to move back to live with her mother and take care of her. To her surprise, she finds someone waiting for her who has waited since they were seven years old to have the love of his life for his own.
