While investigating an apparent spoofing incident at a classified monitoring site in North Africa, a crack security team discovers an alien sentinel stationed in the outer Solar System. Deciphering communications protocols and establishing contact with the ancient sentinel pits the team against powerful military and political factions who learn of their finding and demand control.

But the team discovers the sentinel has a deadly mission when two of them share a strange thought augmentation experiment with the sentinel's ageless, synthetic pilot. The sentinel destroys its pilot and with its enormous capabilities counters every move to stop it.

Left without the sympathetic pilot's covert guidance and having to fend off interference by government factions, the remaining team must find a way to defeat the advanced technology arrayed against them even as the sentinel alters Earth's biosphere and its organisms in horrific ways for a purpose no one could have anticipated.
