Crossing from one iteration of reality to another is possible for only a tiny percentage of the population-something like one in several million. For the rest of humanity, attempting a crossing always results in a sudden and deadly shut-down of the nervous system. Jonathon Endifield was one of those special people, and when he returned from a successful mission into an alternate reality, and then died instantly and inexplicably, Jate Goldmet and a few of his co-workers want to know why. In trying to get to the bottom of the mystery, Jate and his friends set events into motion that will result in Jate encountering another iteration of himself-not a twin, but a duplicate, who wants nothing to do with Jate, his friends, or any part of those who can move from one alternate reality to another-or so he says. When Jate's employers secretly recruit the other Jate Goldmet into their organization, it results in the possibility that one, or both of them, will explode, implode, or just disappear from any of the myriad of alternate universes.
