Mara was only sic when she was pulled out of Lake Michigan's turbulent waters and adopted by a Kindly judge. Though her early childhoods was a mystery, she sensed even then the extraordinary mental gifts which her unknown past had bequeathed her.

Mara, now grown to young adulthood, still ached to understand her past, and the strange nightmares which yet haunted her. Then she discovered in a deck of Tarot cards some astonishing clues to her early life, and following their advice she returned to the lonely lakeside cottage which had been her first home. There, she was plunged into a terrifying chain of events, part real, part nightmare-which would not only reveal her mysterious origins, but threaten her sanity, the she had grown to love and her own life.
