Phantoms Challenge

The group dropped down around Gunner and huddled together as close to each other as they could get. The phantom footfalls descended on them with a thundering noise that was amplified by the echoing walls and ceiling. The sound would have been nearly impossible to take under the best of circumstances, but in the darkened ice-cold hallway, it was murder - both on Justin's ears and his already-frayed nerves. Muriel covered her ears and screamed, as did Richard and then Jeremy, and in the last few seconds before the maddening drumming reached a peak, Justin realized that it really was true that your life passes before your eyes at moments of near death.
