It should not have happened, Carline told herself. She ought not to have fallen in love with Chris. Chris was her patient -- she had thought of him as that from the very first day she had seen him in hospital. A physiotherapist had to give everything of herself to her patient and yet give nothing of herself, and remain tranquil, with heart untouched. Much, much more so when he was already as good as engaged to another girl, and that girl the odd, lonely young creature whom Carline herself had specially promised to befriend. But she had fallen in love with Christopher, she was living as one of the family in his beautiful Chelsea house, and she could not abruptly take herself off without seriously delaying his recovery.
