The trip south to Jasper, Alabama, for the Lipscomb-Gray Family Reunion is one that the Johnson's look forward to each year. For Bernice and Leonard it symbolizes family, renewed spirituality, and homecoming. For eleven-year-old Tamika and her younger brother Douglas, it means the official start to summer. Six weeks of endless fun and adventure "down home" with Grandma and Grandpa Stokes, Big Momma, Aunt Fran, and their thirteen-year-old cousin Tory. This holds true the summer of 1973 as the trio experience the journey of a lifetime by way of time travel into the darkest period in African American history as slaves. Together they plan their risky escape with Harriet Tubman on the Underground Railroad from the beginning to their deliverance to freedom in Canada.
