An old institution, Meridian Insurance is a huge company located in a building nicknamed The Box in San Diego. The company employs hundreds, including young Cara Goodrich. Cara is moving up in the company, and she quickly gains the attention of her boss, Maureen.After several parties, Maureen reveals she's part of the Society of Jack-O'-Lanterns. It's an old, secret, and powerful organization. Their stated goal is to take women and men who have been abused and downtrodden and raise them up, part of their larger goals of making the world a better place. Above all, Society members think outside the box.Cara is all for it. And she's all for moving up. But advancement runs into problems when her best friend's boyfriend, Mike, shows signs of being abusive. And it really runs into problems when he turns on Cara.Now faced with thinking outside the box to escape a box, Cara realizes that sometimes being boxed-in . . . is inevitable.
