When mild-mannered reporter Michael Hamilton created fictional hard-driving, hard-boiled detective Mack Dawson, he didn't know how hard it was going to be on him. When Mack's fictional adventures came too close to fact for someone's comfort, Michael had to be eliminated.

Gretchen Stockwell was constitutionally incapable of turning her back on a homeless waif -- whether it was a gargantuan Great Dane puppy, or a big lug of a man with a gift for blarney and a suspicious head wound. Michael needed her, and Gretchen found she had some strong needs of her own. But she couldn't take in a stray man the way she'd taken in a stray dog...could she?
