1886, Montana.

Opal Whitfield is a brilliant but scattered bookworm with a penchant for inserting herself into dangerous police investigations. Although her line of work is tending record books for local businesses, her focus leans towards the town's rumor mill and mooning over her friend Daniel Smith. When a strange logbook is discovered in Boston, it seems to be the perfect case for Opal's skills as she quickly realizes the book contains a secret code.

Like his brothers, Daniel is haunted by the past. As the Sheriff of Hope, Montana, he spends half his time chasing Opal away from danger and the other half dodging her advances. He's afraid to love her, but he can't leave her alone, either. As Opal takes on the biggest and most dangerous challenge of her life, all he can do is try and keep her safe.
