On a golden summer's morning in 1914, Sophie woke to the joyful realization that it was her wedding day. The youngest child of Justin and Hilda Pickering, she had lived all her life at Minton House, in the Devon village of Otterton St Giles, together with her brothers, Sandy and Jeremy, and sister, Ellen. Sophie was to marry Sandy's old schoolfriend, Roger Eddiford, who had lived in the village with his Aunt Dolly since he was ten years old.
