About This Book
At the end of ‘Now Just Listen’, Charlie Bristle and his friends had successfully brought an end to the criminal career of Eric Newton. During the subsequent celebrations Charlie asked his girlfriend, George, to marry him.
At the beginning of ‘Line Up Quietly’, after being married for five years, George tells Charlie she is pregnant. This news does nothing to change the chaotic life that Charlie leads and, again, we find him crashing from one mishap to another.
When their daughter, Kate, is ten years old, Charlie takes a promotion and the family move to West Sussex. His series of misadventures continues but gradually over the next six years his mental health deteriorates with the constant interference and pressures from the government. At the same time, George who has had a medical condition from birth, also suffers a decline in her health. Later, when Kate is taking her GCSEs, George finally succumbs to the illness that they always knew would probably be her last.
Two years later on the day of Kate’s last ‘A’ level, Charlie, who is now a county adviser for IT, visits a local primary school and is thrown into emotional turmoil on meeting the headmistress, Carol, he had last seen when at college.
