At the urging of his old friend Johnny Jordan, Santa Fe police chief Kevin Kerney takes a job as a technical adviser on a contemporary Western being filmed near the Mexican border. Joining him on his working vacation are his wife, Lieutenant Colonel Sara Brannon, and their three-year-old son, Patrick. And before long, a dead man on a road near an isolated border crossing, a federal undercover investigation into immigrant smuggling, the search for a fugitive from military justice hiding somewhere in Europe, and Jordan's troublesome behavior will embroil them in circumstances that will forever change their lives....
