Not Quite a Gentleman

The fourth book in the Buckingham-Brown series follows the fortunes of Carel Lescott, the third of the heroic soldiers from the Crimea. Carel was a common man, no heritage and no fortune to help him along. He had made his life in the army as a bit of a loner until he met not one, but two men he could call friend. They lived, fought and very nearly died together before those two friends married into the Buckingham-Brown dynasty. He became a steadfast and reliable presence in his friend’s lives. The ex-soldier and ex-spy is busy, always busy, in the employ of that same Buckingham-Brown family. He feels he has been left behind by circumstances, until a chance encounter with a lady in distress. Constance Connelly had fled the famine in Ireland and seen the horrors of the Crimea, but in England in the mid-1850’s being beautiful, intelligent and willing to work hard counted for little if you are a woman alone. This enigmatic stranger gave her hope, he seemed to understand.
