When Vicky Fischer shows up in private investigator Meg Lacey's office, the case sounds routine, even simple: track down Vicky's sister Sherry Hovey, an unassuming Vancouver housewife who has skipped out on her husband. Meg agrees to the job, but her investigation turns up some puzzling dead ends as she discovers that few people seem to really know Sherry, and fewer still are willing to talk about her - including her co-workers at Cooper's restaurant, her new upstairs neighbor Ed Jeffries, even her Salvadoran housekeeper Teresa Minero. But when the trail suddenly leads to two shocking murders, Meg realizes she is entangled in a terrible web of deceit far more deadly than she ever imagined.
