With her priorities being focused on getting working on her doctoral degree, Deborah loses what matters the most to her. She has an affair with another man she meets at the University and asks Brian for a divorce. This brings stress to Alyssa their five year old daughter whose excited about going to first grade the coming year and doesn’t understand why her mother doesn’t live with them anymore.
Brian James is a school teacher who wants to provide for his family and believes he has built an eternal family. But when his with Deborah divorces him he takes a job in the remote town of Navajo Mountain on the Utah Arizona border on the Navajo Indian Reservation. He takes the job as principal of the high school in the hopes of gaining experience as a principal in order to get a job as principal near his family in Utah. He also takes the job to get away from Deborah his ex-wife because of the pain he is going through.
Once in Navajo Mountain, Brian feels lonely, isolated, and depression about his life, and his only comfort is being with his daughter Alyssa who brings him joy. At first the people of Navajo Mountain treat Brian as an outsider, including Mariah who works at the local medical clinic. They become attracted to each other, but because of their different cultures they see it as forbidden love.
Alyssa is befriended by Mary one of the teachers of the high school who baby sits her. They end up on a few adventures together involving Navajo Mountain and Rainbow Bridge. Brian starts to question his thoughts and emotions. He is confused about his love for Deborah, and how it went wrong, and his feelings for Mariah. Through it all he still holds to his faith in God and attends church in local members homes on Sunday.
When Alyssa is diagnosed with bone cancer, Brian goes off on his own vision quest for answers. What he finds is that love is eternal, and that Alyssa is a daughter of God. He feels the love of his Heavenly Father in his life and gains a better understanding of love and in the end reveals his true feelings for Mariah, and has a great love for the people of Navajo Mountain where he decides he wants to stay and raise a family.
