Eccentric Miss Mackenzie, wealthy head of an ancient Scottish family, distrusts her handsome nephew Angus, and so she gathers a group of young people around her at Cairie Castle in the Highlands, and tells them she intends to select one of them as her heir. Her companion Edie Hepton soon has more to worry about than her employer's eccentricity, for there are strange happeningson the mountain behind Cairie, which come to a chilling climax in the dungeons under the old castle.
