When Dr Richardson was ordered to take six months' rest in a remote Cornish village, he was also advised not to reveal his profession. It was not always easy to maintain this deception, and Gillian, a beautiful local girl who ‘adopted' Peter because he seemed so unhappy, was constantly intrigued by his evasion of questions. Expecting a lonely six months of acute boredom, Peter found himself leading a busy but very different life from his normal one, and when the time came to return to London and his ‘girl friend' he went reluctantly, for his whole outlook on life had changed—and so had Gillian's.
