An exclusive spiritual retreat in southern France, the abbey of St. Pierre la Croix, finds its pastoral delights marred by the apparent suicide of its benefactor, the notorious Hollywood film director Thelonius Kapp, newly arrived with his wife, pop superstar Salome.

Private investigator Ulysses Donaghue's vacation is turned into a working one when Kapp's tragedy is followed by the death of Mrs. Kapp's hairdresser, and then by the death of a novice, who is crushed in an ancient wine press.
