Fate introduces Laura Baker to RCMP Sergeant Neil McKenzie when the officer must inform Laura that her husband has died in a traffic accident. Several months later the new widow raising preschool twins alone attempts to break free of her debilitating grief with a family camping trip to the Canadian Rockies. Two escaped convicts elude authorities as they make their way to a Rocky Mountain safe-house. A grizzly sow emerging from hibernation seeks shelter in a remote meadow to protect her cubs from a rogue grizzly male. Sergeant McKenzie still unable to erase Laura completely from his waking thoughts is assigned to investigate the prison break.
