Mose O'Shay is a terrible man indeed, born into that cesspit of iniquity named the Five Points in New York City, he is a giant of a man prone to bloody acts of violence that even exceed the hard times of the day, for he is mighty indeed in body and spirit.
On the run and with an unexpected windfall Mose is called away from the squalid tenements of his known city environment and taken into the wild territory of the new Republic of Texas. From the harsh city streets Mose travels with a pair of his most trusted companions onto the wide-open plains of a savage land.
There he finds trouble is looming in the form of a greedy rancher with a force of hardened fighting men fresh out of Houston's army. Captain Miles Abernathy hopes to make the first lucrative cattle drive north along the Shawnee Trail.
