About This Book

Lydia, a young woman living in Vermont in the years just before WW I, chafes from living under the dictatorial demands of her aged father, yet is unwilling to leave his house until he releases money she's inherited from her deceased mother. James, her clandestine lover, begs her to forget the money and come away with him, but she will not give-in to her father's emotional and financial blackmail. When she accidentally kills her father trying to escape his irrational rage, she flees to New York City, only to be manipulated by a Mafia thug and held against her will in a mid-town brothel. James tracks her to NYC to try to find her and bring her back to Vermont, but without luck. Meanwhile, the brothel is raided by police motivated by a wealthy socialite, who recognizes Lydia's potential and hires her as an assistant to help organize a massive Womens Suffrage march that's about to take place in the City. James happens to see a photo of the organizers and returns to New York to try one more time to find Lydia and bring her home. But she has found a new home and a new passion, and must make the difficult choice between her new and old loves.
