Elizabeth's journey to Cape Town included the very reverse of a shipboard romance, for a lively mutual dislike was established between her and a certain tall, dark passenger, the handsome South African Nigel Van Kaner. So it was a shock to her to learn on landing that there was a very close connection between this man, and the father she had come so many miles to see.
