Meet Octavius Rixton, a young Victorian gentleman who leads a double life as Octavius Fanks, detective. When a man is found dead of a morphine overdose in the village of Jarlchester, the jury decides upon a verdict of suicide. But Fanks isn't so sure. As he investigates he becomes increasingly suspicious of the French chemist's assistant Monsieur Joolees (known locally as Monsieur Judas). But soon, Fanks is soon forced to confront the possibility that the real culprit may lie closer to home...
