Lt. Otto Voge, formally of the German Police, has come to bitterly regret ever volunteering for active service. Within months of arriving at his unit in occupied Poland, Voge has become enmeshed in a sordid and criminal underworld. Even when he tries to do the right thing, the result is usually disastrous, for a friend today can be an enemy tomorrow.
