By all rights, Captain Sam Starbuck should have let some other seaman ferry the Nantucket widow on her search. But he knew that Mercy Wright would find nothing more for her trouble than proof of her husband's perfidy, and he wanted to be there to soften the blow.

Mercy refused to believe that her husband was dead. There had to be more to the story than Captain Starbuck would tell her. With or without him: she would uncover the mystery, even if she had to sail halfway round the world to do so.
