The writer Dey Skull visits the country of Landia to investigate his family roots, but becomes involved in the bitter national miners' strike. His interest is drawn to the Xarti, a minority group persecuted, slaughtered, and expelled fifty years before. He meets the leader and founder of the miners' union, Dr. Garen Slyn and flees into the mountains with him.
Dey discovers the doctor is a relative of his, and shares Xarti ancestry with himself. Together, they find a solution to the miners' and Landia's problems.
