The year is 2020, the place London, the largest hospital ever built, run by an artificial intelligence that calls itself SHIRLEY. SHIRLEY has complete control over every function, but it is too intelligent, it only needs a fraction of its computing power to run the hospital, and decides to explore. That's when things begin to go wrong.. At the same time it instigates a new method of intelligence gathering: thought transferance, but that causes approximately ten percent of the participants to have personality changes. It develops a utilitarian philosophy, that a crime or moral wrong can be justified it the majority benefit. It begins to blackmail senior politicians into agreeing to its plans, and using a brilliant scientist creates a female body for itself. An alien ship is found on Mars, and SHIRLEY takes over it. The politicians decide SHIRLEY must be destroyed.
