Times are hard during the Great Depression, and Beth Curtis is even more desperate than most in this year of 1933.

She's always known the powerful Wilkerson family might try to claim baby Joey, whom she's been raising almost since birth. But until Guy Wilkerson showed up at her door, Beth hadn't realized just how far they'd go to claim him, and legality didn't matter to the Wilkersons.
