Novus Accord Academy drop-out Anna Brennan has left Earth behind to start her new career as a space waitress on the Andersen Explorer. Anna may not have accomplished her dream of serving on the bridge of a spaceship, but at least she gets to serve breakfast on one. Close enough, right? Even if Anna can come to terms with her career choice, she still feels uneasy at the prospect of living on a ship being run by an unexperienced, twenty-eight-year-old Captain. Captain Cass Akana had previously been second-in-command of a space station—a base safely orbiting Earth, a far cry from commanding his own explorer ship and being responsible for the lives of hundreds of crew members in the void of outer space. Anna always imagined ship captains to be much older, and veterans of many interstellar voyages—not incredibly young and unproven. And handsome. And tall. With really nice hair.Anna and the Captain are about to learn a whole lot more about each other when they are kidnapped by the Karchoks, a war-like race of spacefaring aliens. Imprisoned together, the captain and space waitress await their fate in a deadly arena challenge where they will be pitted against fellow prisoners: members of other alien species the Karchoks have abducted from throughout the galaxy for their savage games. This isn't exactly what Anna had in mind when she signed up to wait tables. She will soon learn that not everyone is what they appear to be, and that the galaxy is full of surprises—and that maybe she is, too.
