Penny Grainger's romance with Mark Kenway had been conducted entirely by letter - a correspondence that had been wished on them both by Penny's employer, Mark's domineering Aunt Marion. The
first time Penny actually met Mark was on the night of his return to England - the night of the fancy dress ball given by Aunt Marion to announce their engagement.
