When Mary Lou Thurston goes to the beautiful Lorrimer estate to apply for the position, neither she nor Mrs. Lorrimer, who placed the ad, realizes what it will involve. For when Mrs. Lorrimer's son Travers sees Mary Lou, he believes her to be Delight Harford, a girl he had loved-and perhaps married-years ago in wartime London.

Travers had emerged from the war with his nerves shattered-a virtual recluse obsessed with the idea of finding Delight again. Desperate to help him, Mrs. Lorrimer hire Mary Lou to remain with them as Delight harford. Her salary will be generous, her duties only to keep Travers amused. Mary Lou likes Mrs. Lorrimer, pities Travers, and enjoys the fairytale luxury of her new way of life. But when she falls in love with Travers, she realizes that her glass slipper has a crack in it. Travers loves her as Delight ... but how will he fell toward Mary Lou Thurston, who has been living a lie since she first met him?
