Docile Fanny Wright is the poor relation at Madison Park. After ten years, she longs to take control of her life. She harbors feelings for Edmund Bantham, the second son, but sophisticated Harry Crawford charms and flirts with her too. She fantasizes about them both in her lonely attic room. One afternoon Harry samples Fanny's commanding passion. He knows she loves Edmund and suggests they share her. Edmund cares for Fanny and wants her too. He agrees if she consents. Fanny knows Edmund won't marry the poor relation. Harry will marry a wealthy woman. But in passion she can have control. When suspicions arise, Harry and Edmund court other women to distract from their liaison. They explain, but she can't ignore the truth. She has no future with either of them.
