A girl dies under mysterious circumstances, and the police declare it suicide. The girl's mother, however, is convinced it's murder. Tanner sets out to find the truth. Searching in the fetid coastal swamps of Georgia's Low Country, he enters a rarely trespassed world where human life is a cheap commodity and where the seamiest side of the sex trade lures desperately poor girls into sordid slavery.

Aided by the relentless Detective Patricia Latham and a fundamentalist preacher whose own granddaughter has vanished into the depths of the skin trade, Tanner must overcome soul-blackening corruption and confront the most inhuman degradation to accomplish his mission.

But even as he takes the good fight to the worst of men, Tanner slowly finds himself becoming as savage and unrestrained as the very monsters he is trying to destroy...
