In addition to a busy pediatric practice, Prentice Blake also serves as staff physician for the Lake County, Illinois, Child Protective Services. It is up to him to decide whether children's injuries are from legitimate accidents or stem from neglect or abuse...the latter two of which will result in removal from the home environment. His deep longing for children of his own makes it especially difficult to see mistreated children, and he finds one case particularly troubling...
