Dark-haired, spirited Martha O'Toole was one of the prettiest girls in Carleton. But she lived in the wrong part of town, with her fisherman father, and could not compete with other girls who dressed better, had money to spend and didn't have to overcome a "shanty-town girl" reputation. None of this seemed to matter to Andrew Weatherby. He was determined to make Martha his wife—even though his father, one of the richest men in New England, would probably disinherit him if he did so. Yet what Andrew did not know, and what Martha knew too well, was that all too often the price of happiness was more than money.
