About This Book

Paul Crawford (16) is an American living with his parents in Spanish Morocco in 1919. He smuggles in order to buy a ranch in Wyoming. He just wants to be a cowboy. After Paul has sex with a Berber woman, his parents are killed by rivals. Paul joins Francisco Franco's forces, learning that his lover bore a child (Darlene), and Franco has her. After attempting to assassinate Franco, Paul takes the girl and flees to the Canary Islands.

He settles on an islet with Col. Ramon Garrido and his family. After his past returns in the form of kidnapers, Paul travels to America with Darlene, who has turned 13. When Darlene sings in a saloon, a shoot-out ensues. Unable to remain in America, father and daughter return to the Canary Islands.

After two peaceful years on the islet, Garrido's daughter, Armanda, arrives. She has become a revolutionary, and plans to kill Franco. Hearing this, Darlene goes to Franco, but she is arrested, and will be killed along with Armanda. Paul finds himself in the same position he encountered 16 years before: seeking peace, but finding his family at war.
