A collection of short stories from S.R.Crockett first published in 1901. These are longer stories previously serialised and offer a miscellany of his best selling stories. Crockett's ironic use of the word ‘idyll' is evident throughout.There is true Scottish Gallovidian coquetry from the muse of the Byre. There is an abundance of Mr Crockett's vigour as a battle painter and the realisation of that modern muscular Christianity which is equally ready with its fists and its tears, and which beyond all doubt Mr Crockett sometimes makes provokingly attractive. This collection of nine stories, previously serialised in a range of magazines, are variously based in Galloway, Edinburgh and Europe; thus offering a miscellany of some of his best selling stories. There is much that is familiar here to Crockett's readers, but also characters and situations that are new, offering the opportunity to travel from ‘Drumquhat' to the Austrian-Prussian war and back again.
