About This Book
Meriam Thomas, a young schoolteacher, spends part of her summer vacation with her father, Captain Thomas, who is stationed at a Naval base in Argentia, Newfoundland. Her trip there, with a stopover in Boston and the rest of the way on the Coast Guard cutter, the Castle Rock, is filled with fun, men, and mystery.
Meriam meets the very personable Stanford Hamilton--seemingly by accident--on a sight-seeing tour of Boston. But the dashing and well-dressed Lee Johnson appeals to her greatly, too. She can't decide which one she prefers and, oddly, she is not sure that she trusts either of them.
The only cloud in Meriam's personal life is the death of her brother, Tommy, while on a secret mission for Naval Intelligence. Neither Meriam nor her father knows the full circumstances of Tommy's death, but they do know that the FBI is working to unravel the mystery connected with it. Meriam's already close relationship with her father is heightened by the loss of her brother, and their longing to know why Tommy died. They are sure thar he died a hero's death, although the newspaper accounts would make it appear otherwise.
On the Castle Rock, where Meriam is the only female, the men vie with one another for her company. And in Argentia, she is treated to a round of parties and dates in true Navy tradition.
But along with her adventures are misadventures. Why does someone seemingly want something from her luggage? And why is it that when she and her father go on a sight-seeing tour in St. Johns, she has a feeling of being watched?
