Faith Marshall's name was not true to her nature, for in reality she knew nothing of a true faith. Born into a divided home (her father a Gentile and nominal Christian, her mother a Jewess and only an occasional follower of her faith)" Faith was torn between two concepts of life and two interpretations of belief.

Even into her young adult life this conflict raged on—for despite her mother's objection, Faith fell in love with Keith, a fine young man, but a Gentile. Her mother wanted her to marry a Jew, and carried on a vigorous campaign to turn Faith against Keith and toward Mark, the older son of a wealthy Jewish family.
