"Describe the opening of the Stockton to Darlington Railway on 27th September 1825 as if you were there." His primary school teacher charges Lewis Noble, 10, with writing a story on the subject so Lewis decides to ask his friend Mr Hunnicutt the Darlington Bank Top Station Master. Accidentally whisked back in time to 1825 by a time-travelling family from the future as part of a futuristic time-travelling holiday experience, Lewis then gets to see the event first-hand and meet the real historical characters in the flesh! But will he manage to interview George Stephenson, experience the first railway journey, make it back to the present before anybody discovers he's missing and still be able to write an excellent essay?
