All the inhabitants of Terra Vera have heard of Karl Claw. There is not a human, alf, dweorg, orok, or gnome who hasn't shuddered at the name of the mysterious and powerful mercenary. However, few know anything of the person behind the myth. Karl Claw is but one name for Marcus Canidae, a man trying to outrun his destiny. The offspring of a human and an alf, he has unnatural strength, and many foresaw that he would fulfill a great purpose. But Marcus doesn't care about prophecy or power. Too many heartbreaking betrayals have led him to reject the religion, politics, and social customs of Terra Vera. He only wishes to spend the rest of his days alone, away from those who seek to exploit or destroy him. Marcus doesn't get his wish. When he meets a young girl with powers and troubles similar to his own, he feels compelled to act. She is mystically connected to a dragon of great power, and the beast is on a desperate rampage to find her. It is only after Marcus decides to protect the child that he learns the horrible truth—she is a pawn in a mysterious organization's dark schemes.
