On the eve of the twentieth century the world is changing rapidly, and Laura MacKenzie wants to be a part of the coming age. Her parents, forever entrenched in their old-fashioned ways, are running the Wild Rose Inn the same way their family has for two centuries. Laura is sure there must be more to life than she finds in rustic Marblehead, Massachusetts, if only she were given the chance to leave and seek her destiny for herself.

When Laura meets Grant Van Doren, a student at Yale University, she's introduced to new possibilities. Laura can almost taste the freedom and adventures Grant and the new era offer her.
