About This Book

Lanterns at Our Feet tells the story of five Amite County, Mississippi families that were forced into a system where many families were torn apart, brutalized, humiliated, dehumanized and stripped of their names and heritage. Nevertheless, they endured the injustice of slavery and left a legacy of their struggle and lessons that provides day-to-day inspiration for all of us. Discovering the lives of the Butts, Bradleys, Walkers, Robinsons and Kenersons provides a greater understanding of the common struggle and triumphs of African American people in the American story in general and the Amite County Mississippi story specifically. Their stories represent the struggles of the many African-American men and women of Amite County who, despite the injustices they endured, advanced onward to uplift themselves, their families, and their community.
