A Magic Circle

The first meeting between Lady Hilary Merton and James Wincanon, the dashing new owner of a neighboring estate, did not go as planned. An avid student of archaeology, the spinster politely asked permission to excavate on his land. But James rudely accused her of feigning an interest in his favorite subject-to trap him into wedlock. Hilary was appalled. She certainly had no interest in a bachelor as insufferably conceited as James Wincanon.

Then an astonishing thing happened. Caught in a thunderstorm near a Druid circle, Hilary saw a bolt of lightning strike and a figure in antique attire suddenly appear. Was this a wrinkle in time or an elaborate hoax? Only James Wincanon, an expert on ancient Rome, might know best what to do. But when they put their two heads together, Hilary wondered if she, too, had been struck by lightning-when the one man she couldn't abide turned out to be the only man she would ever love.
